On 10th January, 1915, the 1st Hertfordshire battalion of 4th (Guards) Brigade, 2nd Division, left their billets in Richebourg-St Vaast and marched four miles to some trenches where they relieved the Irish Guards. They had 6 posts of 8 men in trenches and 4 Companies in Rue du Bois, south-east of Richebourg, in support. The remaining 3 Companies were in reserve and the Company in the trenches was relieved every 12 hours. The battalion diary has little else to say about this time spent here other than to record that Harcourt Snowden was killed on 11th January while in a support position. |
